NY City faces record snow fall this year
Mar 1st
Around other snow-pelted areas around Big Slushy Apple, it was just as bad, if not worse. Harriman, N.Y., dug out from 32 inches of snow, West Milford, N.J., had 28 inches of snow, and Monroe, N.Y., had 31 inches. And, that’s before the drifts, which some people said were seven feet high.
Yes, the storm, dubbed a “snowicane” by AccuWeather, lived up to its advance billing as it slowly moved offshore.
“The radar did show it with a hurricane-type eye,” says Josh Nagelberg, a meteorologist for AccuWeather.com in State College, Pa. “It does have the signature of a tropical system, but obviously it is not.”
Vernon Golston may be cut out by NY Jets
Feb 22nd
Gholston is one of the most intriguing items on the Jets’ offseason agenda. As of now, the organization is truly undecided on whether to bring him back.

Ordinarily, a team never would consider unloading a former first-round pick (sixth overall) this quickly – three years left on his contract – but the prospect of no salary cap under the current CBA means the Jets could cut bait and absorb the large cap hit without having to worry about too much “dead” money.
Do they jump at a rare opportunity or do they give it another year on the off-chance Gholston becomes a contributor? If they opt to cut or trade him, he won’t be missed in the locker room.
“I don’t see the passion,” said one of Gholston’s teammates, speaking on the condition of anonymity. “He plays stiff and he just doesn’t seem to have that love for the game. I’ve never seen any emotion at all.” More >

New York City’s Times Square was home to quite the circus yesterday morning. Whether you know it or not, Adidas just launched a line of “Star Wars” branded sneakers. Yes, my inner geek is howling with joy. More >
NYC Limits billboards
Feb 5th
A federal appeals court ruled Wednesday that the city didn’t violate the First Amendment by limiting the number of billboards along its roadways and parks.
The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan said the city’s goals of reducing visual clutter, improving the overall aesthetic appearance of the city and regulating traffic safety were reasonable.
“The fact that the city has chosen to value some types of commercial speech over others does not make the regulation irrational,” the appeals court said. It concluded that it didn’t matter that the city had enforced its regulations sporadically since 1940. More >
NYC announces BigApps winners
Feb 5th
The winners of the first NYC BigApps competition, which invited the public to develop applications using raw sets of municipal data, were announced at an event in New York on Thursday evening.
The competition, which the city’s Economic Development Corporation kicked off in June, gave software developers access to more than 170 sets of data from 30 city agencies, including weekly traffic updates, schedules of citywide events, property sales, results of restaurant inspections and mappable data around school and voting districts.
A panel of judges, which included John Borthwick, chief executive of Betaworks, and Fred Wilson, a partner at Union Square Ventures, selected 10 winners from a pool of more than 100 entries. Cash prizes totaling $20,000 will be shared among the winning teams, and they will also be invited to a dinner with Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg. More >
