NY Mets owners dealt blow in Madoff case

Owners of the New York Mets struck out as a federal judge refused to dismiss a $386 million lawsuit by the trustee seeking money for victims of Bernard Madoff’s fraud, clearing the way for a possible March 19 trial.

District Judge Jed Rakoff in Manhattan also said the trustee, Irving Picard, is entitled to collect as much as $83.3 million of “fictitious profits” from the owners, led by Fred Wilpon and Saul Katz, without a trial. While rejecting the owners’ bid to throw out the entire case, Rakoff said he nonetheless remains “skeptical” that Picard can prove they acted in bad faith in dealing with Madoff.

New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin has shrugged off many suggested comparisons to his Super Bowl winners from four years ago as he prepared his players for Sunday’s National Football League (NFL) title rematch against the New England Patriots. Yet the Giants coach said he was still tapping into one of the underlying themes used to motivate his players for their upset of the then-unbeaten Patriots in the Super Bowl.

“It’s still us against the world,” said Coughlin, recalling the rallying cry used by the 12-point underdog Giants who denied New England’s bid for the first 19-0 season. “That’s the way we play it, period. We’re still the underdogs. We still have an awful lot to prove.”

Gholston is one of the most intriguing items on the Jets’ offseason agenda. As of now, the organization is truly undecided on whether to bring him back.

Ordinarily, a team never would consider unloading a former first-round pick (sixth overall) this quickly – three years left on his contract – but the prospect of no salary cap under the current CBA means the Jets could cut bait and absorb the large cap hit without having to worry about too much “dead” money.

Do they jump at a rare opportunity or do they give it another year on the off-chance Gholston becomes a contributor? If they opt to cut or trade him, he won’t be missed in the locker room.

“I don’t see the passion,” said one of Gholston’s teammates, speaking on the condition of anonymity. “He plays stiff and he just doesn’t seem to have that love for the game. I’ve never seen any emotion at all.” More >
